A battleship is the heaviest form of spatial combatant used by human navies, such as the UNSC Navy. They have a hull classification symbol of BB. Equipped with the hardest-hitting armaments and the thickest hulls practically on a mobile platform, battleships are slow-moving and are usually only deployed in protracted fights above planets of strategic value.
Characteristics[edit | edit source]
Battleships are extraordinarily massive warships, typically built with a tonnage no less than 20 million metric tons, and an overall length that can be many kilometres long. They are described as mobile fortresses, with an iconic main battery of heavy naval coilguns or missile turrets backing up several super-heavy spinal cannons, and an assortment of smaller mounts to protect them from small attack craft. Their mass means that they cannot avoid incoming fire like smaller ships can, and even the most advanced engine arrays available cannot grant them a high amount of acceleration. Thick armour, strong shields, and overlaying active protection systems are all common features for battleships. The sheer amount of reinforcement needed in their frame means that they have a protracted, resource-inefficient construction time, with only the largest of navies are able to build and man more than a handful. This also means that they have little in the way of modularity, as the techniques needed to achieve this create structural weaknesses to be exploited.
